Back in high school when I was into punk, my best friend was into Abba. I was never a fan of them but I did learn to respect the quality of their pop craft thanks to her. Oh, and thanks to Phil Oakey, too, who always gave Abba props in interviews well before the Human League put out "Dare."
I find this thread extremely thought provoking, especially since (despite the familiarity of some of his influences creeping into his originals—e.g., see threads on IMW and TGS) to the best of my knowledge John Foxx has not recorded or perforned any cover versions since the early days of Ultravox! and probably thinks of himself as too serious an artiste to consider ever doing so. With that in mind, I think an Abba covers album is a great idea to puncture any sense of lingering self-important pomposity.
Therefore I cast my vote for "Waterloo." Come on, it's already got the "whoa oh oh oh," which is awfully close to his signature "oh oh."
