More remaster news...possibly...

ReOrdered

Peter Hook confirms that the remastered New Order Factory-era albums (Movement, Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood, Technique) are finished (at least on the mastering side of things) and will appear this September & October. (Initial release date for the first titles is September 22.) They will follow the same concept as the recent Warner Joy Division remasters: 2 discs, one being the album, the other being a live show from that era.

So, September is going to be a bloody expensive month by all accounts! Shame there's no notice of extra tracks though - just a bonus live album. New Order were/are (delete as applicable...which is dependant on Hooky's mood swings) a great band, but live they were a bit of a shambles!

I would have passed on these entirely but then I read the small print in your post re 'live shows from that era'.

I then further read 'live they were a bit of a shambles' so to be honest I am totally undecided at this point.

thanks for the news Gazz.

I think they were/are always interesting live. More than Joy Div and some others I won't mention here...

Thanks for this news. Though New Order was an inspiration, their bickering has tainted my feelings for them. It's long overdue, but some stray tracks would have been nice.

Reissues should be handled like Elvis Costello's back catalogue was handled by Rhino in the US. Superb. If one is a fan to buy two discs, they should offer more than this.

It falls into the line of having 10 "best ofs" etc... A fan just looses interest with a shoddy treatment of a catalog like this.

Nice to see they've restored the front cover to PC&L, and all the additional tracks on the bonus discs (I wonder what happened to the proposed live sets?).

I've had a re-think on purchasing these though. Unlike the Foxx re-issues, there's nothing there really that I haven't got already (Technique's bonus disc aside).

I think I'll go for Movement just as a bit of comfort music for the dark winter months ahead. Plus the two Temptations are, erm, tempting.

PC&L = springtime
Lowlife = summertime

..well I've got to spread the purchases out somehow. wink

7. Thieves Like Us (Instrumental) (06.59)
8. Confusion (Alt Version) (07.36)

Low-Life (1985)– bonus disc

1. The Perfect Kiss (08.49)
2. Subculture (07.26)
3. Shellshock (John Robie Remix) (06.28)

8. Vanishing Point Instrumental (5.12)
9. World In Motion (Cabinieri Mix) (5.55)

To save looking around I'm posting the Bonus Disc track-listings here. I'm still underwhelmed to be honest – two mixes of Confusion, but no 586?

Nice to see the inclusion of Run 2 though – I thought they’d never be allowed to re-issue that because of the court case ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_2 ) perhaps Denver’s estate have acquiesced?

I'm thinking about it. Shall I go for a new order? laugh It'll have to wait for the new year!

The bonus discs make the albums more complete but most of the stuff we have somewhere in compilations and other rare releases.

Video 586 could have formed part of the bonus disc of PCL, perhaps there wasn't enough space. The tracks already there are fundamental to PCL.

New Order still happens to be one of my favourite bands so I'll add these to my collection at one point together with the Joy Division reissues.

According to Mojo, "Rather than the alternative versions or live material that often bulk out such things, the reissues will simply unite the albums with their contemporary singles and B-sides, giving a more in-depth view of each release [...]"

This sounds like a marketing man making the best of a potentially missed opportunity.

Having said that, I only have Brotherhood on CD so I will probably be tempted to invest, at least in PC&L and Technique. Nice to see the long version of "Elegia" (previously on the extra disc of the Retro boxset) making a reappearance.

Thanks for the round-up RadioB; still think I'll go for Movement and Technique in primis in primis as they have the most stuff I don't already have on compact disc. A kind of 'bookend' effect.

(BTW I see the JD collector's editions are on offer in HMV..cough cough..)

They probably were not the tightest of live bands but they were always quite fascinating - Taras Shevchenko is worth checking out, there was another live video as well I think (from the '80s). Live on Top of the Pops they were one of the few not to mime, they also did a live video for "The Perfect Kiss". Furthermore, Barney would often alter the lyrics as well which was amusing.

Funnily enough, there are three major bands whose output has never significantly appealed to me.

These are New Order, Simple Minds and U2. Can't explain it really

I have to agree with C Puddle. There's nothing particularly 'spectacular' about their live "shows" (ŕ la U2) but they always seem(ed) to pull it off. I would also recommend the two live DVDs although I haven't seen the latest one.

The Sunday Times & The Times will start giving away free albums from this Sunday. Those bands mentioned are; The Doors (Strange Days) and albums by; Love, Echo & The Bunnymen, Jesus & Mary Chain, Joy Division and New Order - at present, I've no idea which albums are to be issued.

I know what you mean - if it is one of the New Order albums proper - why are they giving it away free a week after the expensive (and if rumours are true, poor) re-masters released last week?

Strange Days indeed

Mind you, you'd have to say it is good publicity. I don't know what the circulation of The Times/The Sunday Times is these days but there's a certain audience there that might be tempted further into the back catalogue (and to buy the 2CD version of PCL). Especially with albums THAT good.

While part of me DOES agree with you both, another part feels that it's not a big deal really.

These are only promo items. They will contain all the music but will appear (presumably) in a card sleeve and not be coming in a jewel case with expanded artwork. And they are only available for one day (barring eBay subsequently)! It will still cost a pound to buy the paper so unless you get the Times anyway it is not particularly "free". And if you hunt around you can pick up "Closer" and the others at dirt cheap prices anyway. Or you could download the album for next to nothing (or even nothing if you are so inclined).

I think my overriding opinion is that these giveaways are useful in promoting a band to an audience which otherwise might not be aware of them.

I was at a conference this weekend about 'the future of journalism' and a chief editor of a well known Sunday paper said that all British newspapers are now obsessed with getting more 'women' and 'young' readers .. I was tempted to ask why the Times is giving away Joy Division ann New Order albums....(but I didn't).

I suppose it's nice to think that my (Conserative-voting) 70 year old uncle will now have a copy of 'Power Corruption & Lies' kicking around his house (oooh the irony...) wink

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

The controversial New Order reissues saga takes another interesting turn.

Power, Corruption & Lies, Low Life and Technique are now only available on Amazon through the ‘Used & New’ section.

Not sure what this means regarding refund/exchange issues on the original copies that have been sold, but clearly Rhino have now recognised the problem and say that there will be new reissues in early 2009.

Movement and Brotherhood have as many issues as the others but have yet to be pulled. I noticed the other week that HMV had also pulled the stock from their Oxford Street branches also.

Sound like a classic case of 'product recall' for which all manufacturer's should be ready for, whether it's a dodgy batch of frozen peas, a faulty gasket on a Mercedes or a duff NewOrder record...

But as I've said in me blog it's def a case of major multi-national botching up a job .. not so in the case of Foxx/Ultravox remasters which are clearly the fruits of fan-based labours of love.

Warner: take the shame!

This is coming out next year from Rhino – I’m getting fatigue just thinking about it. I won’t get it as most of these tracks are widely available elsewhere – there’s hardly any rarities, a clear indication that all the milking of the Factory back catalogue has left nothing in the cash cow.

Considering Rhino's recent form with all things New Order, I'll be expecting a 'faults n all' page on neworderonline come February.

It's worth bearing in mind though that the Joy Division remasters issued just over a year ago were handled by the same company involving the same suspects (New Order, Jon Wozencroft, Paul Morley, Peter Saville etc.) and there's not a single thing wrong with them.

The group’s first album without Peter Hook(!) features additional production from Stuart Price and the Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands

I think the clip sounds more Chemical Brothers than New Order - but it's only 10 seconds long. Still - all ten of those beautiful analogue seconds are diamonds compared to Waiting For The Sirens Call.

Wonderful news. They've been hit-and-miss on record for ages, but a new album means more touring, which is always a good thing. smile
