Reading one of Chris C's recent playlists:

http://www.metamatic.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000004;p=18

I was reminded of New Musik's excellent World of Water single.

These were the first touring band I saw live and it was, what, 1979? A few local pub bands and stuff before that (as I still enjoy immensely), but I think this would count as my first proper gig.
They were good, too!

What about you...?

The first band I saw live was Ratsia. This was 1981 in Kinnula, Finland. Ratsia started as a punk band but later changed to a something like Joy Division.

That gig was my first "night out". After that there's been a few..

I went straight for the best!

Peter Gabriel, Secret World Tour
Monday May 24th, 1993, Sheffield Arena

I can even tell you what I was wearing (but I won't)!! I was 15 and had been into Peter's music for just a few months. That concert was not only spectacular, but it opened me up to a whole new world of music and creativity. Amazing.

Not bad for a first gig. And it was only £20, which by today's standards is just pennies!!

By today's standards, yes, but at the time quite expensive. The average stadium show in '93 was only around that price mark, so for an arena show it was 'pricey'...

eek

John Peel Roadshow, Teesside Polytechnic, around 1984/5.

Bands were "The Flower Drum People", Basczax (spelling?), and Patrick.

TFDP were excellent, Basczax were good, and Patrick were tremendous, but way too loud for such a small venue. There was also a local comic on, but he got pissed off and left when we ignored him in favour of fighting our way to the bar to get ratted on lager in plastic glasses.

Straight for the best for me too!

Ultravox - Set Movements Tour
May 25th 1984, Bristol Hippodrome

Ahhh. yes... laugh

Saw Peter Gabriel on the So Tour, the night Kate Bush guested (Earl's Court, I think). Amazing Show. Saw him recently too on the Growing Up tour, but somehow I missed Secret World. Still can't quite understand how that happened.

First gig should have been Classix Nouveaux at the Portsmouth Locarno in '82, but it was cancelled. frown Instead had to put up with Ultravox later that year, Poole Arts Centre (I think - might have been Colston Hall, Bristol!).

Cerise, I too was at the Set Movements gig, Bristol Hippodrome '84! In between I had had my first taste of Mr Numan live, Warriors tour, Poole in '83.

No Alex it wasn't me I was upstairs to the right overlooking the stage. We had our tickets moved by the venue because of the originals restricted view.

I can't remember which night it was - I will have to extract my 1984 diary from the garage - I expect the ticket stub is in there somewhere, too!

Quite simply,I managed to get to stay behind after the gig and meet the band,I was also given a small pile of tickets to get the band to sign(ticks had the Vienna album pic on them)I had one for the whole band to sign on the back and when Warren was asked he duely signed, then continued and sighne the rest(4 more) above his head on the front pic) the rest of the band happily signed too untill, one to get!!,I asked Midge...."Can you sign this please?"(I was 15 at the time remember)..his reply??..."Well!..If I f*****g have too!!",signed it and just about threw it back at me!!
sorta put me off them,HIM,since!!

For some reason I can't really explain, though music was increasingly important to me I dithered about going to see it performed live and my first gig was in 1983 when I was 18. It was Marillion at Birmingham Odeon. Just a couple of months before I had turned down a chance to see John on The Golden Section Tour at the Tin Can Club in Bradford Street, Birmingham. A seedy dive with a strip club on the floor below, but much cooler than breaking my gig-virginity with Marillion!

BUT MY THIRD CONCERT (in 78) I !!!! HAVE TAKEN MY BROTHER WITH ME!!! TO MY ONLY EVER SEEN CONCERT OF ULTRAVOX!

What a gig!...

Now I had found my music ... This love never ended until today! laugh

A lot! of Concerts of the New wave period followed...
