| Forbert made some
four hundred of these movies during his lifetime. He worked as
a janitor around several movie cutting rooms in Hollywood and
took to saving bits of discarded film. Much of the stock is scratched
and often badly damaged, but this only adds to the mystery and
romance of the footage. He later acquired a viewer / editor machine
junked from one of the rooms and set this up in his attic. When
Forbert died, Arnold acquired the work and considers it to be
the highlight of his collection. This is a section of a Forbert
film that he identifies as using cutting room outtakes from a
Sinatra movie, among others which remain unidentified. Shots
are: Back view of a man in a suit looking through the window
of a set interior (too tall for Sinatra - possibly an extra brought
in to test-light a scene). Some brief outdoor shots of cars driving
through a glittering downtown New York. Close-up of a woman applying
deep red lipstick - again this appears to be a test shot of make-up
and lighting. Location shots of Paris and Rome. Intricately cut
together, these damaged fragments become an almost tactile essay
on the sensual textures and enigmatic images that film can make
available. |
