| Jonathan Lloyd
is 22. He is indicative of a new generation of filmmakers who
use combinations of analogue and digital media. Lloyd's films
are all of sunsets and he is not afraid to display projections
of spectacular and ravishing beauty. He lives and works from
Blackpool, a town on Lancashire's Fylde Coast. "Facing West
over the Atlantic we get the most glorious sunsets here. When
I found Turner's work, I realised we have a forgotten British
tradition of sensual, romantic image-making which also has many
other resonances. Turner's painting prefigured Impressionism
and led the way toward abstraction. He operated at a pivotal
moment between two eras, romantic and technological and captured
that all in a universal image. I think he's one of the most significant
artists in history. All this connected with my own work when
I discovered that he painted from this same coastline. Then I
realised we're now at another pivotal point in history. Later,
reading that these spectacular sunsets are partly a result of
dust and atmospheric pollution drifting out to sea, only enhanced
their resonance and poignancy for me. I want to promote a sensual
/ intellectual engagement with both image and medium. Turner
used oil paint and I'm using media appropriate to my time - Super
8mm film, fixed by being digitised. Luscious stuff - project
it big and you get techno Turner, Hollywood Monet - and it all
moves. Huge projections of abstracted colour and light." |
