We've had the digital-only The Bunker Tapes for a few months, and now the proper album release of the Machine Stops music is coming: The Machine by John Foxx and the Maths, due in February.

(I suppose everyone may know already through Facebook or twitter, but I like forums.)
Well, I like forums too. I don't do FB or social media. Thanks for the tip!

No FB and no twitter here too.

Thanks for the info, Steve! I like the Bunker tapes recording a lot. For me, one of the best works John and Benge did together. Great we will have a studio recording soon, too.

One of the reasons I want a soundtrack of the play to be released (ideally on DVD) is so that we can identify which of these tracks are sampled, cut, looped and otherwise mashed up into the action on stage

Written during 2015 & 2016, the music was commissioned by director Juliet Forster as the soundtrack for the theatre production of E.M. Forster's short story The Machine Stops. Not all of the music was used and the album features some different mixes to those which accompanied the stage show.

The final track-listing is as follows...

Presumably, this is an instrumental album (being a soundtrack) ... i.e. there aren't any vocal songs included?

No, there aren't any 'vocal songs'...

However, there are vocal performances - though not by John...

Hope that helps...

I can't recommend The Machine Stops theatre production highly enough.
It really is a great interpretation of EM Forster's dystopian short story.
The soundtrack - which makes up some of the material on the new album - is mixed live as the action unfolds.

I saw it and met the cast in Eastleigh last year, and will be going to the show in a Foxxian Highgate setting on March 10th

Got my copy yesterday. Initial listens generally positive smile. Some distinct nods to a few sounds from "The Golden Age of the Future" Human League demo CD wink
The sounds are all very stylised and it's a style I like, so smile
Coincidentally Hawkwind released an album based on The Machine Stops last year. I like the taste of the instrumentals but the songs are perhaps a bit 'heard 'em before'.

Hey - shouldn't this thread be posted under the JF+TM category?
