Do you ever find you are drawn more towards certain artists or albums in different seasons?

For example, I've always found that I play John's more recent albums more in the Autumn/Winter months... there's something about the scents in the air and the colours that somehow (at least in my rather bizarre mind) relate more to the music.

However to contrast that, Metamatic and The Garden are definitely summer albums for me.

Peter Gabriel's music tends to be Spring time music for me. Gary Numan or Depeche Mode seem in place in either Summer or Autumn/Winter. Maybe it goes with the cold, dark nights.

Bowie's stuff always feels right at the start of the year as winter comes to a close.

Of course I don't just play those albums/artists at set times of the year! But somehow, as I said, certain songs or albums just seem to be more fitting for certain times of year.

Am I talking nonsense?! ;-)

No Alex, you are not talking nonsense.

I think TPOE is a wintery album.I played it a lot on my MP3 player whilst mountain biking in the early morning wintery mists around the rivers & lakes of Kingsbury water park last year.
Will be doing the same again soon I think.

Systems of Romance I love to play loud enough to blow my brains out in the Summer months. laugh

No Alex – I get SAD (Seasonal Artist Disorder) as well! I guarantee Harold Budd’s ‘Avalon Sutra’ album will get played in the coming weeks, as well as David Sylvian’s ‘Secrets of the Beehive’ after all – “September’s here again…” smile

TPOE is a very wiintery album, I agree :-)

I often wonder if the time of year in which an album is released plays a part in what you associate with it....

Its not just seasons that 'does it' for me, i also play albums depending on the day of the week. My best example is sunday tends to be 'C.O. day, not because of religion but more the quietness of the streets outside.

Oddly its that way today......and ive just played 'Cathedral Oceans 3' on a wednesday.

or rather when you first heard it .. I played Ms Bush's Aerial this morning and it is just so spring into summer for me..even tho I think it was released in the deep mid-winter, pre-Xmas. All that birdsong tho would seem to be more springy.
..the list is endless I s'pose.

Same thing happened to me when i bought Midge's 'live in concert '91' cd on the 5th of november. I tend to play that around oct / nov time every year now.

In the summertime when I sit outside alot, I like to play very loudly Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers and many of my non-synth music groups.

I never ever play Gary Numan outdoors.

Also, summer evenings are good for Blues music.

The Durutti Column is pure summer for me, but it has to be sunny or it doesn't work.

The Pleasures of Electricity came out in late January or early February I believe. It definitely belongs in that time of year for me. I always associate it with Canary Wharf too since I first visited there (at night) at about the same time. Most other Foxx albums are spring or summer. I first heard Drift Music in a September dawn walking through Bristol.

I am struggling to think of an album I would play whatever my mood, whatever the weather, and whatever the time of year/day, but that is natural I suppose.

I've never given a lot of thought about music being seasonal until I read this thread.

I tend to vary what I play by how I'm feeling and where I am. If I want a relaxing piece it's ambient music i.e. CO, Drift Music. Translucece or something Alex as made.

If I'm feeling lively it's Crash and Burn

If I'm Peed off then Gary Numan's music helps.

I did listen to a lot of CO though back in the nice weather in spring when I did a lot of walking in the wooded area near where I live.

Sometimes I just glance though my CD collection and think "thats what I fancy listening to today or now"

Peter

Good topic, Alex! smile

I asked the same question to myself. I love to listen more to Cathedral Oceans in Autumn/ Winter times 'cause of the atmosphere. It is nice to let some candles burn and it is dark and cold outside.

The Shrewsbury C.O. boot works fine in that way too - great stuff!

All the other stuff of John I listen to the hole year, but there are some tracks which works fine in Summer especially if I driving my car and hear it loud!!! cool
Best time is if I drive to my work...YEAH!!!! laugh

Systems of Romance always reminds me of snow and a cool evening sky.

And I also find that Gary Numan's music helps when I'm in a bit of a bad mood!!
