I promised a while back that I would take some pictures for you all. Well, what with the tube strike last week, I decided to walk into work and since The Garden is only 20 minutes from home, I thought I'd take the camera out.

You'll notice in photo 3 that the building next to the studios has gone. The constant regeneration of the City means that what you can't see just out of shot is that Holywell Lane is pretty much one big construction site - so I think we should write to UNESCO to preserve it in case it goes! One day I'll make one of those blue plaques - um, yeah, that'll stop them.

If you're going to the Cargo gig, well The Garden is just a two minutes away and it's above a really, really good Italian cafe called Barone - I can recommend the Napoliata Panini!

The Garden....um, the roof Garden!?

Thanks for that Garry!

I am travelling to London on the day of the Cargo gig, and will definitely try out that Italian place. I have a penchant for Italian food! Actually there was a nice Italian restaurant at Putney Bridge, because I sampled their yummy food on the day of the Fulham event. Walked away with a big piece of pear and polenta cake too, which didn't last long once I got back to my hotel room, made some tea and watched Wimbledon! wink

Anyhow, I digress, The Garden looks different from what I had in mind, but at least I know what to look for now! laugh

Hi Garry
Thank you for posting the pictures. I have visited the outside of The Garden studio before with Shadowman and it looks exactly the same as I remember it.

I like Italian food as well.

Thanks for posting them Garry. Ive never been there to see it for real, but its very different from how i imagined. In the early eighties i always thought of it as a sci-fi looking building covered in leaves at the bottom of John's own garden. Not quite the same, but good to see it.....

[just a note OT: panino is actually a bread roll or lit. 'small bread' but also commonly used as 'filled sandwich' in spoken Italian. It's quite funny you use 'panino' in English as the Italians use the word 'sandwich' but usually to denote small triangular affairs. (cf. cucumber sandwich, tuna sandwich). 'Toast' (pron. 'tost') also used to denote toasted sandwich, usually with ham and cheese..]

now where were we....ah yes, The Garden. Perhaps it should be called 'Il Giardino' for effect....you'd get more chance of UNESCO award Garry smile

Hi All,

Glad you like the pictures!

Will - the address is Barone, 192-193 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6HU. All I can tell you is, for a small humble café the coffee's good and the food is really good! How close it is to an authentic Italian panini I'm not sure! But I digress. And like Sarah, I'm putting my sandwich order in too! laugh

Mark - The Il Giardino above Barone; great music, great food! Could work! Lets email UNESCO! wink

I did sadly wonder, in an anorak kind of way, looking at photo 2, if this was 'The Lifting Sky' John was looking at when he recorded it.
